Cowell is a country remote town on the Eyre Peninsula, located next to the water. The population is about 1,000 people in the district. There are 3 cabin/caravan parks to stay at in cowell. There are 2 main beaches a 10-15 minutes out the road. Cowell was origionally founded in 1802 as a large lagoon known as Franklin Harbour, then it was then renamed Cowell in 1880.
Cowell is a major aquaculture but it's also a major farming community. Last year the farmers were going through a drought we had like no rain last year. This year the farmers
Cowell has a lot of sports, generally most saturdays in winter we play netball/football agaist nearby towns, Cleve(a.k.a Eastern Rangers), Kimba, and Arno bay/ Port neil(a.k.a ports). Netball/Football training is on a thursday. In the summer some people play cricket on a Saturday and on friday night people play Tennis. Also in summer there is swimming club which is on Wednesday and Thursday night. some girls play Softball on a tuesday night in summer. Basketball is generally, in term 4 of school. Bowls i a popular sport for the older people the bowls green is right next tot he hostel and cottages.
Even though Cowell is a remote town we have their is two 2 pubs, A roadhouse, A IGA, A bakery, which by the way makes the best pastries, A butcher. Majority of the meat in the butcher is killed in Cowell. Their are 3 different places where to get fuel in Cowell. the pubs do great pizza's, and the franklin pub (known as the botton pub) does a spit night.
Cowell is a major oyster and fishing town, there is about 13 different oyster leases in Franklin Harbour, Cowell also has A oyster hatchery 5 minutes out on the Pt. Gibbon road. Their is a wide variety of seafood to catch in the harbour and outside of the harbour. Including silver whiting, snapper, squid, mullet, flathead, garfish, snook tommy ruff and blue crabs.
